Blepharospasm

Blepharospasm is a benign uncontrolled contraction of the muscles around the eye, resulting in episodic forced closure of the eyelids. This can be very distressing and debilitating for patients and interfere significantly with daily life. The cause is unknown, but treatment is usually effective with Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections. As the effect of Botox lasts an average of 3 to 4 months, regular repeated injections are required to control this condition. The Botox injections are administered with an extremely fine needle and therefore do not cause significant pain or require any local anaesthetic.
